Leftists use a vocabulary in which everyday words have precise meanings. Frequently, users may not even know it and are just repeating what others say. It can be difficult to know just how deeply these people ACTUALLY understand what they are saying. Read the first two in this thread by Khanh Pham (OR HD 46, SE Portland) . Focus on the word JUSTICE.
Justice in everyday use usually means correcting a wrong under the law. A person’s rights have been violated and justice restores that person and/or prosecutes the wrongdoer. A classical liberal and conservative view also hold social justice as a way to ensure EQUALITY in which people are treated EQUALLY under the law.
CRITICAL SOCIAL JUSTICE however seeks to create EQUITY. Whereas EQUALITY treats people the same, regardless of immutable characteristics (race, sex, etc.), EQUITY dictates that immutable characteristics MUST take precedence.
Simple scenario:
A white person robs a black person of $1000
EQUALITY dictates that the white person pays restitution to the black person and serves a predetermined time in prison. Both people go back to the way they were before the robbery took place.
EQUITY dictates that the white person is enacting PRIVLEGE and POWER. Restitution and prison are not enough. Because black people have been OPPRESSED for 400 years under slavery and Jim Crow, the white person must liquidate personal assets to make up for this wrong. This is how reparations are viewed. Furthermore, in an EQUITY view, everyone becomes completely equal in EVERY way. The same amount of everything makes the world perfect in their eyes. If this sounds like communism, it is. Instead of economic equity, everyone has racial, sexual, size, and ability equity or justice.
Back to how the problem may be solved using her thread.
SOCIAL is the adjective, so Khanh Pham swaps out social for TRANSPORTATION.
What would TRANSPORTATION JUSTICE look like?
EQUAL TRANSPORTATION would look at improving existing transportation options (busses, bike lanes, light rail, roads) so that people can get around easier. We also know that businesses need roads, so they have the incentive to build things that work. Local solutions for local problems. Increase opportunity.
EQUITY TRANSPORTATION would dismantle the existing systems in place to make people equitable. Since this has never been tried on a wide scale, it would probably look like the government taking away your car and giving everyone a bicycle, or telling you to walk everywhere. Equity achieved. Everyone has the SAME OUTCOME.
The takeaway from this is that whereas Libertarians seek to create more EQUAL opportunities through free trade, hard work, and agorism, leftists seek to create equal OUTCOMES through adjusting society on a global level. We see reality as an obstacle to overcome. They think they remove the obstacle through magic. This has been tried before, and it doesn’t and indeed cannot work.
Take a look at the definition of SOCIAL JUSTICE by James Lindsay. Familiarize yourself with how they use language. Once you see it, you cannot unsee it.
